The Pilgrims' Path

Most religious-themed Jordan tours stop at Mount Nebo, Madaba, and a quick look at the Jordan River. This itinerary builds a fuller pilgrimage arc — the UNESCO-listed baptism site itself, the hilltop fortress where John the Baptist was martyred, an Islamic-Christian shared shrine most foreign pilgrims never hear about, and time in Madaba's living mosaic workshops rather than a 20-minute church stop.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 01Day

    Amman — Anjara — Ajloun

Morning: Our Lady of the Mountain Church in Anjara, a Marian shrine venerated by both Christians and Muslims locally, associated with a resting place of the Holy Family — included on very few pilgrimage itineraries despite Vatican recognition of the wider Anjara-Pella area's Gospel connections.

Afternoon: Ajloun Castle and the town's small but active Christian community and church.

    Overnight: Ajloun or Amman

  2. 02Day

Pella — Umm Qais — Amman

Morning: Pella (Tabaqat Fahl), one of the Decapolis cities and, according to early Christian historians, the refuge of the Jerusalem church community after 70 CE.

Afternoon: Umm Qais (Gadara), traditionally associated with the New Testament account of the exorcism of the Gadarene demoniac, with sweeping views toward the Sea of Galilee.

    Overnight: Amman, 4★ hotel

  3. 03Day

Madaba — Mount Nebo — Bethany Beyond the Jordan

Morning: Madaba's Greek Orthodox Church of St. George (the 6th-century Madaba Map mosaic) with time in a working mosaic studio, followed by the Madaba Archaeological Park's Church of the Apostles.

Midday: Mount Nebo, where tradition holds Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death, with its Byzantine-era mosaics and Memorial Church.

Afternoon: Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas), the UNESCO World Heritage-listed baptism site on the Jordan River, including Elijah's Hill (Tell Mar Elias) and the remains of five Byzantine churches — the site itself, not just a river-viewpoint photo stop.

    Overnight: Dead Sea, 4★ resort

  4. 04Day

    Machaerus (Mukawir) — Dead Sea

Morning: Machaerus, the hilltop fortress of Herod Antipas identified by Josephus as the site of the beheading of John the Baptist — a dramatic clifftop ruin overlooking the Dead Sea that appears on almost no standard religious itinerary despite its significance.

Afternoon: Free time at the Dead Sea for floating and mineral-mud bathing, with reflection time built into the schedule rather than a rushed 90-minute stop.

    Overnight: Dead Sea, 4★ resort

  5. 05Day

    Amman Churches — Departure

Morning: Amman's Citadel (with its Umayyad-era mosque foundations) and a visit to one of Amman's active parish churches in the historic downtown area before transfer to the airport.
